They hadn’t even allowed me go up the stairs first.

But if I’m being honest? Even with all the shit going on with my dad, it was kind of hot to see the three of them fan out the way they did, handguns readied as they cleared the corners and entrances of Wolf Mountain’s den.

My eyes fell on Bear, who moved with the same agility and grace of the other, leaner two. I couldn’t help but think about how quickly he’d calmed me on the road, how he seemed to read every expression I made, everything I did. He, like Alex and Logan both, was clearly full of surprises.

And surprises are hot.

Alex went into the next room, whistled at the view from the living area. As predicted, the sun was dropping behind the mountains across the valley, giving us another sunset. The other two followed after him.

“I keep telling you,” I said in an almost sing-song as I joined them, “no one’s here. Just us chickens.”

“Moo,” Logan said, holstering his weapon. “Think she’s right, guys.” He turned back to me. “You guys have a security room?”

I twisted my mouth to the side, shook my head. “Not that I know of. Dad always kept this as kind of his sanctuary, and he only used security while he was in the city. Said he felt more safe here.”

“There’s got to be a security terminal, though,” he said. “You’ve got an electronic gate, which means there’s probably some kind of records that are kept on file. Maybe, if we can look through them, we can find the owner of that mystery cigar you found in his suite.”

“Last place we worked,” Alex said, “they had it in a secured location behind a bookshelf. Rachel, any place you could think of that would have that kind of extra space?”

“Well, there’s the library,” I said, uncertain. I mean, I knew my home, didn’t I? Of course, I’d never really spent the time looking for secret passages, so what did I know?

“Show me,” Logan said. “If you know what you’re looking for, you can normally spot where the construction is slightly off.”

“Uh. Sure. Follow me.”

“We’ll keep clearing the house,” Alex said to our backs as we headed off.

“Sorry,” I said to Logan’s back as we headed for Dad’s wing, “but I don’t ever really come to this side.”

“Place this big, I can see why.” If he was impressed with my home, he didn’t show it. Just kept his gun up and ready as we stalked through the dead mansion. “Probably only take a couple laps to get your ten-thousand steps for the day.”

I smirked at his back. “That door, over there.”

We went past the stairs leading to Dad’s suite and into the next room. With the sun on the other side of the house, it was dark inside, and he flicked on the lights.
